Tips For Properly Watering Your Turfgrass Lawn

What’s so hard about watering your lawn? You just set the sprinkler and let it go, right?

Well…not exactly.

You may not realize it, but there is definitely a right way and a wrong way to water your turfgrass, and it matters – especially if you’re a customer of ENVYLawn.

Proper watering makes a huge difference in the overall health and appearance of your lawn. That includes everything from color to disease prevention. So, if you think you’re missing the mark when it comes to keeping your grass hydrated, here are our specialized tips for proper watering technique.

Tip 1 – Recognize When Your Lawn Needs Water

Your lawn will present a few tell-tale signs when it needs water. Primarily, this boils down to three indicators:

  1. Color – A lawn that needs water will change from a vibrant green to a dull, bluish color.
  2. Rebound & Recovery – Healthy grass will quickly rebound and recover its shape and stature after you’ve walked across it. If you notice imprints from where you’ve walked, or if your blades lie flat, that’s a good sign your lawn needs water.
  3. Wilting – If the blades are wilting, browning, or showing signs of deterioration, that means your yard is in desperate need of hydration.

Tip 2 – Water In The Morning

The best time to water your turfgrass is in the early morning. By doing so, your lawn will have the opportunity to dry out throughout the day. You should not water in the evening. This will keep your lawn wet throughout the night, which encourages the development of fungal diseases.

Tip 3 – Water Deeply, but Infrequently

We suggest watering only once or twice a week. When you do, be sure your grass is getting at least one inch of water, which takes about 1 to 2 hours to distribute. You’ll certainly want to use a sprinkler, and you can buy a cheap, plastic rain gauge to make sure your lawn is getting the right amount.

Light, frequent watering will not substitute. Watering your lawn in this way only wets the surface and encourages shallow rooting – making the grass less tolerant to drought. Furthermore, DO NOT water your lawn everyday unless you’re establishing a new lawn.

Tip 4 – After Treatment, Water In Before Mowing

If ENVYLawn has recently treated your turfgrass, it’s very important that you “water in” BEFORE you mow. If you don’t, you’ll just be removing the treatments from your grass before it has time to penetrate and start working.
